Thallus grey-white to pale creamy white or creamy grey, 0.1–0.2 mm thick, continuous, rimose to areolate, to 5 cm wide; areolae irregularly shaped to angular, 0.5–0.7 mm wide, upper surface smooth to rough and verruculose, lacking soredia and isidia. Prothallus not apparent. Photobiont cells 6–10 µm wide. Apothecia sessile, round to irregular, scattered to crowded, 0.1–1.5 mm wide; disc orange-red to bright red or red-brown, glossy, epruinose, concave or ±plane to strongly convex; margin concolorous with the disc, thin, persistent or excluded with age. Exciple colourless to red, K+ red. Epihymenium 12–15 µm thick, red or orange-red, inspersed with fine reddish granules, K+ reddish purple. Hymenium 40–50 µm thick, colourless, K–. Hypothecium 50–100 µm thick, deep yellow to pale brown, K–; subhypothecium colourless or pale brown, to 50 µm thick, K+ yellow → red. Paraphyses strongly conglutinated, mostly simple, 2–3 µm wide; apices not conspicuously swollen. Asci c. 25 × 10 µm. Ascospores elongate-ellipsoidal, 9–11 × 3.0–3.5 µm. Conidia filiform, curved, 20–25 × 0.8–1.0 µm. CHEMISTRY: Cortex K–, C–, P–, UV+ yellow, medulla K+ red, C–, P+ yellow; containing lichexanthone (major), norstictic acid (major), secalonic acid A (major or minor), connorstictic acid (minor or trace), unknown secalonic acid derivatives (minor or trace). Apothecia K+ reddish purple; containing russulone (major), norrussulone (trace). |

Grows on bark and dead wood in coastal and monsoon forests from sea level to 700 m in eastern Qld. Also in North, Central and South America, Africa and New Caledonia. | ||
